The picturesque town of San Pedro de Alcantara, Marbella – as we see it today has grown from being a small agricultural village to a thriving residential town; with continuous construction from well known National and International Developers, this town has become a “must see” on a tourists list of places to go when visiting Marbella.
History
The history of San Pedro de Alcantara began with the General Manuel Gutierrez de La Concha e Irigoyen, the first Marques del Duero in 1860 who created the agricultural colony of San Pedro de Alcantara. He recruited only experienced agricultural workers and brought them from the coastal towns of Granada, Almeria, Valencia and Murcia to work the land, offering great working conditions of the time including: housing and land for the families. So we could say, that since the 1900’s this area was already an attractive location to move to.
In 1945 the original home of the first Marques del Duero was converted into San Pedro’s main Town Hall offices as you see today, situated close to the main square “Plaza de La Iglesia”. This is where the first church was built in 1866, one of the first grand urban projects built by the Marques.
