Mid October is when the town of San Pedro de Alcantara, Marbella comes alive with a week-long “Feria” dedicated to its patron saint San Pedro.
San Pedros History
Originally an agricultural colony, famous for sugarcane, founded in 1860 by General Manuel Gutierrez de la Concha and Irigoyen who was the first Marquis del Duero. San Pedros agricultural colony was considered one of the most advanced and important in Spain between the 19th and 20th centuries. The village, one of the main travel routes communicating the southern coastal towns to Ronda, Seville and Malaga, originally a Roman route.
San Pedro Today
San Pedro still remains an un-spoilt Spanish pueblo with a very traditional town center structure, and is home to famous Roman ruins on the beach, sheltered by a forest of eucalyptus trees and where local fisherman still fish for their daily catch. With 2kms of beach front and seafront promenade now reaching Puerto Banus and Marbella town to the east (aprox 12kms in total length) with own cycle path. To the west, Guadalmina and further afield the New Golden Mile and Estepona. To the north is the end of the traditional route to Seville, passing through Ronda, commonly known as the Ronda Road. San Pedro has a well-known bus station; a starting point for a large variety of Andalusian trips and visits reaching cities such as Seville, Malaga, Cadiz, Cordoba, Ronda and even Morocco. San Pedro town center with white washed buildings and narrow streets has managed to preserve its original characteristics. The main church square “Plaza de la Iglesia” is home to the colonial-style church and the Town Hall building both built by the Marquis del Duero in 1866, with a central open air square renovated in the last year providing seating and shade in a charming setting. Plaza de la Iglesia down to the beach, along the main road, passing through the pedestrian area with shops, cafes and traditional restaurants, all with wonderful views down to the sea. Thursdays is San Pedros market day, located to the back of the town, selling a large variety of things; from fruit & veg, to clothes and handmade objects, with a great atmosphere including plenty of loud music.
The Feria
San Pedros Feria is located beachside of the town, between Avenida Marques del Duero and the village of El Ingenio. This year the Feria will begin on the 15th October and finish on the 20th, with the patron day festivity on Saturday 19th, being the most famous and important of days in San Pedros annual calendar. The start of the Feria is on Tuesday 15th October with a parade at 19.00hrs, then at 21.30hrs a fantastic fireworks display right on the beach “Playa La Salida”. Both night and day fairs are to be enjoyed. The day fair begins at midday and continues through the afternoon, starting again at night with “casetas” and eateries providing food, drinks and live music, along with rides and concerts with well-known artists’ performances. To close the Feria, a mass will be held on the Saturday 19th followed by a procession through the streets commencing at the Plaza de La Iglesias at 12.30pm.
San Pedro Feria is the last of the annual Andalusian Ferias to be held. Here is the link to the full days Feria Program:
